No weaves, no clip-ins and no wigs!
While this may seem like a really easy, stress-free way to live as a woman, some celebrities who have some form of African blood in their lineage or are purely African, often feel uncomfortable showing off their natural African hair in public. Once the camera's are out, the thick black curly, kinky hair runs and hides.
Unfortunately, cameras are very hard to shy away from as a celebrity, and a few of them often get snapped showing their African hair, to the amazement of the entire world.
Now, my singular problem with this is, why wont celebrities rock their natural hair proudly in public? I find the idea quite disturbing that once female celebrities are out in public, they constantly have to play dress up, and by dress up, I mean cover their natural African hair.
I strongly believe that the hair that grows out of your scalp is meant for you. It is not to be shied away from or to be treated as a plague.
While I understand that every one is entitled to look the way they want to based on how they feel comfortable appearing in public, I think that African women, who happen to be famous, should be able to rock their weaves, as well as appear in public with their natural hair without having to hide every time they go out for a jog without getting all prepped up.
In early 2000s it was great to turn on my TV and see the likes of Alicia keys and Brandy, rocking nice long braids and corn rows. For selfish reasons, I hoped that we would continue to see more of that on TV, just so we could gain hair inspirations and hopefully gain some form of acceptance, since I always loved braided hair.
The celebrity-natural hair topic is so huge that in 2009, Tyra Banks aired on her show, the topic 'What is good hair', touching on issues of self esteem and why straighter hair is considered good hair. She went on the reveal her corn-rowed natural hair, and encouraged African women to embrace themselves, just as they are.
While some celebrities are a bit more open and accepting of their natural hair, Beyonce has come under media scrutiny for wearing various lace fronts and sew-ins when she is out in public and for spending thousands of dollars on the purchase of her weaves. While I really do not have any issues with that, I feel like natural hair that really is your hair from your scalp, can be carried out in public too, just like she would, any of the lace wigs.
I was pleasantly surprised when Viola Davis, the star of American TV series, How to get away with murder, showed up at an award show with her natural hair. For me, that was quite a refreshing, distinct look from all the flowing weaves that we see women appear on red carpets and award shows with.
Janelle Monae is also famous for rocking her natural hair on any red carpet and so is Solange Knowles.
My point really is, like any other hair style, natural hair should be carried with poise and style and should be proudly shown in public by women of African decent, and famous celebrities are not exempted!
We really should feel comfortable in our natural God-given skin and our hair is icing on our lovely dark skin.
