Happy Holidays!
There is no better time to look back at the events of the previous year than the day before the end of the year right? Anyway, I have decided to do a quick recap of five events that made 2014, well, an interesting year to look back on. I countdown the 5 top stories that made headlines and remained on the lips (or the fingertips-since we die by our smartphones) of naturalists everywhere. Of course, social media was highly instrumental in propagating these news stories. These are my top 5 picks of news and events that shook the natural hair community.
#5. The #celfie or #selfie obsession.
2014 was officially the year of the selfie according to a blog post by Twitter and by ABC news. Celebrities, politicians, ordinary citizens and even President Obama was in on the selfie movement. Naturalistas were not left out. They too turned to social media to share their natural hair journeys, fashion and style with other women around the world. What better way to share than taking a picture of oneself and sharing it across various social media platforms? The selfie has proved to be a fun and effective way to do this.
I recently read a blog post about how narcissistic our generation has become and how the 'selfie' is an indication of how obsessed we as a generation have become with ourselves and our looks. BUT, who cares?! Naturalistas love to share and inspire other women to jump on board and join the movement and of course, beautiful selfies helped convince other women that they were missing out on embracing their kinky curly hair.

#2. The U.S Army vs. the natural hair community.
In March 2014, the U.S Army joined the list of corporations to stigmatise natural black hair by releasing a grooming policy, AR-670-1 that banned army personnel from wearing hairstyles like cornrows, braids, twists and dreadlocks. Of course, this bias enraged the natural hair community and naturalists everywhere did not take the Army's policy lying down. They turned to social media to air their views about the outrageous law on various forums and micro blogging sites.

#3. Red carpet moments.
I love how bold black women became in 2014. They showed off their hair so proudly on the red carpet this year and made us all fall in love. Lupita N'yong of course was a stunner. She rocked her natural hair proudly at all red carpet events and also graced various magazine covers showing off her freshly chopped TWA. Songstress Goapele was also a favourite of mine this year, rocking her blonde hair in its natural state at events and shows. And of course, my natural hair crush, Chrisette Michelle made a bold fashion statement at the 2014 Grammy Awards with a printed paisley pantsuit and her ombre coloured curly hair.

#4. Celebrity hair drama.
The Halle Berry vs. her ex husband, Gabriel Aubry case made headlines late this year. According to TMZ, she (Halle) accused her husband of trying to make their 6-year-old daughter white by straightening her naturally curly hair. The news of this quickly reached naturals everywhere and thousands of comments on the issue danced through social media.

#5. Solange Knowles wedding.
Solange's wedding was to the natural hair community, what the royal wedding was to the world. Solange really is natural hair royalty and of course, her wedding flooded social media sites like Instagram and Twitter.
